The Story is told through Story Items and Cutscenes

The Forest Ending

After the ending of The Forest where the player revives Timmy via crashing another plane (and the subsequent talk show), an apartment scene is shown from the adult Timmy's perspective. It appears Timmy has decided to research more about the Peninsula, and discovered another island which he designated 'Site 2'. where Sons of the Forest takes place. At the end of that scene, Timmy is revealed to still be suffering from side effects from the Resurrection Obelisk but fortunately has not fully mutated like Megan Cross.

Beginning of Sons of the Forest

Jack Holt a journalist and protagonist of the game, accompanied by Kelvin and Fisheye two trained mercenaries as well as other unnamed mercenaries are hired by Puffcorp to track down the Puffton Family, Edward Puffton, Barbra Puffton, and their daughter Virginia Puffton and uncover what happened on the Island. As the helicopter jack was boarding was flying over the island bullets pierce the helicopter resulting in it crashing. Fisheye and the Pilot Perish in the crash, while Kelvin suffers Major Brain damage and becomes Deaf. As Jack wakes up from the crash he is greeted by Jianyu Zhang the main villain of the game. Jianyu strikes Jack with his revolver knocking him unconscious.

The Events of Sons of the Forest

Jack Holt and Kelvin Survive and journey around the island eventually encountering a now Mutated Virginia Puffton and befriend her. They also encounter Hostile Cannibals and Mutants. As the player Survives a helicopter will fly overhead and observe the player. Jack Travels Through Caves and Bunkers attempting to uncover what happened

Eventually Jack enters the Food Bunker and witnesses Jianyu and a few unnamed mercenaries working for him get attacked by mutated versions of Edward Puffton and Barbra Puffton. Jianyu escapes but his team is taken out. Jack Battles the Mutated Duo and is victorious

Later after traveling through the Entertainment bunker Jack encounters Tim LeBlanc who has a large mutated arm and wields a revolver. Tim Warns Jack to leave before something happens again and then runs away

When Jack enters the Residential Bunker he encounters Tim LeBlanc again this time accompanied by his father Eric LeBlanc battling a Sluggy. We see Jianyu and more mercenaries enter the room and Eric gets hit with a bullet fired by Jianyu. However the Sluggy Charges Forward knocking Jack unconscious. When he wakes up he travels through the rest of the bunker seeing a live camera of Tim trying to enter a locked door. We hit a button that says "Open" and see Tim enter the now unlocked door.

Jack travels to the Luxury Bunker and follows Tim through a golden door opened with the Ancient Armor. They traverse through the Hell Cave Fighting off Demons and a Giant Demon. The duo find a Ancient Cube made of Solafite and enter it along side Kelvin and Virginia. Jianyu Appears and attempts to enter the cube but it closes on him leaving him outside of it. The people inside the cube start glowing blue and the back of the cube opens and shows a sky line of a City made of Solafite quickly the cube returns to normal and the front reopens showing a now Mutated Jianyu. Tim's Mutant arm looks worse and he claims the cube was meant to fix him but it is making it worse. Jack turns back around and Virginia collapses in your arms.

The team make it up back to the surface and 3 Helicopters fly down from above. Before they can land the Mutant Jianyu tunnels up through the ground, grab a helicopter, and devour one of its passengers. Tim attempts to stop Jianyu with his mutant arms but Jianyu slams Tim to the ground with one of his appendages. Jack and Jianyu battle and Jack defeats Jianyu. 2 Helicopters land Infront of Tim one of which his father Eric steps out of and hands Tim a Shotgun. They see Multiple Mutants including Puffies, Fingers, Twins, and Caterpillars charging toward the helicopters. Before action can be taken the Artifacts the player collected through out the game come out of his bag and try to temp Jack to stay. The player is presented with two choices the Canon Ending and the Alternate Ending

Ending Of Sons of the Forest

Jack Holt, Kelvin, and Virginia Puffton enter the helicopter along with Tim LeBlanc and Eric LeBlanc. They see the other Helicopter destroyed by mutants and defend their own from multiple Puffies and a Caterpillar. They successfully escape The Island.

Later we see Heavily Mutated Tim in an office talking to a doctor. The doctor says there isn't a way to cure him, but Tim pulls out a piece of Solafite. The doctor is shocked and asks where he got it from.

Jack visits Kelvin in a Brain recovery Ward, he is shown slowly recovering from from his injuries from the crash. He is shown in high spirits and Jack and Him share a moment building a toy log cabin

Then we see Virginia being rushed to a operating theater both jack and Virginia looking worried. "5 Months Later" show on the screen and we See Virginia now only with 2 Arms and Legs enter a Sports Car with Jack. Virginia is shown pregnant and her and Jack are presumably together. She switches the Radio to a country remix of the games most iconic song "Hey You" by Bad Pivot. Kelvin is shown Jamming out in the back seat of the Car.

The Credits roll and we see Books, Magazines, and news papers scroll by detailing Tim's rise to power in the Pharmaceutical industry with his compony LeBlanc Pharma using Solafite to create miracle cures for diseases. We see him buy a new island that is the biggest deposit of Solafite in the world but later goes missing and contact with the island is lost possibly setting up the Next Installment of The Forest Saga.

Alternate Ending

In the alternate ending the player stays at the island along side their companions. The player unlocks a New Cave that contains the final piece of the Artifact allowing the player to craft it and make use of it. New enemies can spawn including Armsy, Creepy Virginia, and the spawning of the Giant Demon on the surface. Cannibals can now also wear Solafite Armor

August 12 19:11 - Edward tells Hank that he is worried about Jianyu and to contact Jack Holt to find out what happened and make sure his Daughter is safe

August 14 10:20 - Jianyu tells Gordon that Edward Refuses to acknowledge what the island is, and if Puffton doesn't take action he will

August 16 11:21 - Edward finds Jianyu's tape of him killing the cultists and tells him to get off his island

March 18 13:51 - Alert Dispatch tells Chuck Dagger that a unusual burst was detected 7 months ago and the readings were similar to what they would see in a dimensional switch

March 20 15:28 - Jianyu tells Chuck that Sahara is funding him better than Puffcorp ever could and that he is returning to the island and tells Chuck to assemble a Team

April 5 11:15 - Chuck warns Jianyu that Dr Masaki contacted Timmy Leblanc and he is also looking for the Cube

April 28 16:46 - Jianyu asks chuck what Jack Holt is doing on the island

Trivia

• Originally the player would have worked for Sahara Therapeutics but was changed early into development, this can be seen in Trailer 1
• The story was improved drastically from early access release, adding voice acting and new cutscenes
• Canadian Actor Shawn Ashmore Voices Tim LeBlanc
