Virginia Puffton
Virginia Puffton is a non-playable character in Sons of the Forest. Alongside Kelvin, she is one of the two known companions that players can interact with. Unlike Kelvin, who is more immediately helpful, Virginia is initially wary of the player. The player must slowly earn her trust through kind and non-threatening interactions to develop a relationship with her.
Her name and characteristic multiple limbs are shared with a mutant from the first game, The Forest. However, Virginia Puffton retains her humanity and is significantly different in behavior and interaction from the mutant version. She can eventually become a valuable ally if befriended, providing support and assistance to the player.
Virginia's uniqueness lies in her initial hesitation towards the player, requiring patience and careful actions to befriend her, distinguishing her from the more straightforward companion dynamics present with Kelvin.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Virginia is a distinctive character in Sons of the Forest due to her unique physical features and evolving appearance throughout the game. Her most notable characteristic is her three arms and three legs, which give her a unique and somewhat eerie appearance. She has medium-long blond hair that complements her striking look.
Initially, Virginia is seen wearing a white leotard. However, as players explore the map and find new clothing items, they can outfit her with various attires once she has been befriended. The clothing options for Virginia include:
- White Leotard: A simple, practical option for when she needs to traverse water or relax by the shore.
- Camouflage Suit: This suit helps her blend into the forest environment, making it harder for enemies to spot her.
- Dress: A more casual and perhaps unexpected option in a survival setting, adding a touch of normalcy to her appearance.
- Leather Suit: Provides a tougher, more rugged look, suitable for the harsh conditions of the island.
- Track Suit: Ideal for when Virginia needs to move quickly and efficiently through the terrain.
Her appearance can be altered based on the clothing available and the player's choices, making her a versatile character visually and functionally.
These details not only highlight Virginia's unique design but also underscore the game's emphasis on player interaction and customization.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Virginia's behavior in Sons of the Forest can be likened to that of an independent cat, as described by the developers. She is elusive and skittish, but with kindness, she can become attached to the player. Conversely, she can be scared off, ignored, or killed, which would remove her from the game save entirely.
Initial Reactions and Adaptation:[edit | edit source]
- Initial Skittishness: Virginia is initially frightened by nearby combat but will eventually adapt to frequent fighting in the game.
- Weapon Use: As she adapts, Virginia learns to use weapons. Her three arms provide a combat advantage, allowing her to wield two ranged weapons simultaneously, such as a shotgun and a pistol.
- Combat Assistance: When befriended and equipped with weapons, Virginia will attack enemies that threaten the player. It's important to note that she does not consume ammo when firing either the pistol or the shotgun, making her a powerful resource when ammo is too limited for the player to use the weapons.
Gifts and Interactions:[edit | edit source]
- Gift-Giving: Virginia brings various gifts to the player, including berries, aloe vera, rocks, sticks, squirrels, and rabbits. These gifts are delivered one at a time, and plants and berries come with seeds. She presents gifts with a soft moan.
- Leading to Points of Interest: Sometimes, Virginia will signal the player to follow her, leading to locations of interest like camps or loot spots.
- Behavior Towards the Player: If the player chooses to interact positively with Virginia instead of scaring her off, she will behave coyly.
Emotional Reactions:[edit | edit source]
- Reaction to Kelvin's Death: If Kelvin, another NPC, is killed while Virginia is befriended, she will approach his corpse and cry before eventually returning to her normal behavior.
Environmental Preferences:[edit | edit source]
- Temperature Sensitivity: Virginia reacts to temperature changes, enjoying basking in the sun and disliking the colder regions of the island.
History[edit | edit source]
Virginia Puffton is the daughter of Barbara and Edward Pufftons. Details about her relationship with her parents remain speculative, but it's known that her father marked her as the sole heiress of his immense fortune, hinting at a favored status over her mother or other possible family members.
Move to Holosprings and Mutations[edit | edit source]
When Holosprings was opened to its first inhabitants, Virginia moved to the Island with her parents. During the initial activation of the Cube, all present inhabitants suffered physical mutations. However, Virginia's mutations were notably less severe, she experienced minor physical alterations and lost her ability to speak but remarkably retained her humanity and conscience. This may be due to her being in the pool of the Entertainment Bunker, rather than at the reception in the banquet hall when the Cube activated.
Survival in the Forest[edit | edit source]
After the disaster, Virginia fled the overrun Holosprings and chose to hide in the forest. For several months, she remained alone, avoiding the horrors unleashed by the Cube. Her solitary existence was interrupted when she encountered two survivors from a recent helicopter crash, Jack Holt and Kelvin. Initially wary, Virginia gradually grew accustomed to their presence. She found solace and comfort in Jack Holt, frequently bringing him gifts such as plants and animal carcasses as tokens of gratitude and affection.
Combat Skills and Relationships[edit | edit source]
Despite her generally wary demeanor, Virginia proves to be an effective combat partner when armed. She exhibits no hesitation and impressive accuracy in shooting incoming threats. Her relationship with Jack Holt deepens as they share the struggle for survival.
Rescue and Aftermath[edit | edit source]
If Virginia survives her stay on the Island, she joins Jack Holt, Tim LeBlanc, and possibly Kelvin inside the Cube, protecting her from its mutagen effects. If the player chooses to leave the Island.
