There are several characters in Sons of the Forest that are related to the story or are a companion to the player.

Gameplay

As the Main character, the player assumes the role of a survivor in the game. Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) have a sophisticated behavioral system, exhibiting a range of emotions such as fear and friendliness towards the player. When the player has established a positive rapport with an NPC, they can entrust them with important tasks, such as gathering materials, constructing bases, and assisting in combat situations. Additionally, the player has the ability to arm NPCs with weapons and equip them with clothing.

Companions can be 'deactivated' or removed from the session by killing them. Multiplayer sessions only have one of each companion.

• Kelvin - Part of the crew sent to investigate the disappearance of the Pufftons. Member of Team A. Is injured following the helicopter crash, suffers a traumatic brain injury that causes him to lose his hearing and apparent aphasia.
• Virginia Puffton - Daughter of Mr and Mrs Puffton.

• Barbara Puffton - Wife of Mr Puffton.

• Doris - A friend of Barbara Puffton.

• Eric LeBlanc - Wilderness survival expert, protagonist of The Forest.
• Fisheye - Part of the mercenary crew sent to investigate the disappearance of the Pufftons. Member of Team A. Dies following the helicopter crash.
• Gordon Lankston - An employee of Red Lamp Storage Company.
• Hank Keys - A contractor from Red Lamp Storage Company that likely oversaw work on the Island.
• Hector Liter - A Sahara Therapeutics employee.
• Ivon - A member of the Sons of the Stars.
• Jack Holt - The main character of the game. He is a journalist who at one point wrote a book on Edward Puffton, earning the latter's trust.
• Jackson Poulet - A Puffcorp employee.
• Jianyu Zhang - A seeming antagonist of the story. It is unclear as to who they are or what they might be after. Knocks out the player following the helicopter crash.
• Miles Goldstein - A Puffcorp contractee. 7-time golf amateur world champion.
• Rob Blue - A Puffcorp employee.
• Silas - A member of the Sons of the Stars.
• Dr. Tetsu Masaid - An employee of Puffcorp.
• Tim LeBlanc - Physicist and published author, son of Eric LeBlanc.
• Members of Team B - Part of the mercenary crew sent to investigate the disappearance of the Pufftons.
