Jianyu Zhang is the main antagonist of the game.

History

Jianyu Zhang worked as a corporate lawyer for PuffCorp. He would express increasing concern over the large amount of odd structures encountered during excavation, as well as the frequent disappearance or death of workers. The arrival of the Sons of the Stars on the Island would prove to be the straw that broke the camel's back for Jianyu. Frustrated by Edward Puffton's cavalier attitude, Jianyu mobilized a small team of PuffCorp's operatives and took on himself to go out and massacre all the cultist they could find. The operation was captured on a body camera worn by one of the agents, and it did not take long for the footage to make its way to Edward. Outraged by Jianyu's action's, Edward promptly fired him with order to leave the island immediately. Worried that Jianyu would attempt to return and exact revenge, Edward Puffton entrusted one of his executives to contact Jack Holt, a journalist who wrote and published his biography, should anything happen to him. Despite him being "Press", Edward remained confident he had the skills and determination to uncover what happened on the Island.

Little did Edward know, however, that he unintentionally saved Jianyu's Life. As the Cube's activation ravaged the Island, a military recruiter by the name of Chuck Dagger recieved notice of an abnormal burst reading caused by the brief dimensional switch and informed Jianyu. Interested in the opportunity, Jianyu approached PuffCorp's long time rival, Sahara Therapeutics, to fund and support a new expedition to the Island with the objective to find and retrieve the Cube. Eagerly accepting the proposition, Sahara Therapeutics provided ample means to Jianyu and sent him back to the Island with a team of mercenaries.

Their expedition, however, would be disturbed by the arrival of a PuffCorp mercenary squadron dispatched to look for the Pufftons. Jianyu's team was promptly deployed to deal with the intruders and successfully shot down one of the helicopters. Inspecting the crash site for survivors, Jianyu discovers Jack Holt crawling out from the wreck. Immediately recognizing him as a journalist from his "PRESS" armband, Jianyu points his revolver at him, but realizing that his investigative skills could potentially lead him to the Cube, he simply decides to knock him uncouncious. In the meantime, Chuck also got wind that Timmy Leblanc, the son of Eric Leblanc from the first game, has been informed of the Cube by former PuffCorp scientists and is now attempting to find it in hopes of curing the Obelisk's effects.

As Jack Holt and Timmy Leblanc enter the Cube, Jianyu rushes from behind, but the door closes on him, locking him out of the Cube. Completely exposed to the Cube's mutagen effects, Jianyu becomes a grotesque, immobile mass of flesh. As Timmy, Jack and any alive companion leave the cave, Jianyu unexpectedly emerges from the ground, having seemingly mutated further and regained mobility, Jianyu desperately threatens the player into revealing him what he has seen in the cube. Now forced to fight, Jack Holt combats the mutated Jianyu to death, putting an end to his schemes.
