Caterpillars, known informally has "John 2.0" and "Worm 2.0", are a creepy mutant in Sons of the Forest. They are a type of exclusively surface-dwelling mutant.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Caterpillars consists of what seems to be two people fused at the buttocks. They normally move by performing handsprings to throw each other's torso above the other, moving in a cartwheel fashion. When approaching a target or attacking, they may sometimes move by slithering onto the ground like a worm.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Caterpillars will charge straight for their target and attack them by either violently swinging its front torso at the player, or by smashing it into the ground. Both attacks will inflict considerable damage on top of knocking down the player, making Caterpillars peculiarly dangerous when appearing alongside other enemies. Despite their awkward anatomy, Caterpillars are both very fast and agile, being able to easily keep up with a sprinting player. However, they are rather slow to turn, allowing players to strafe them easily. Additionally, being very large with predictable movement patterns, they are fairly easy targets for ranged weapons. Caterpillars do not appear to be allied with either surface nor cave cannibals as they will attack both on sight.

Caterpillars appear exclusively on the surface starting presumably on Day 15. They usually spawn solitary, but can also attack in pairs on rare occasions, making a distinct bone creaking sound as they move. They may also spawn to raid player structures, its cartwheel movements allows them to pass over most obstacles such as defensive walls and fences.
