The Rope Gun is a device used to both build and travel along ziplines in Sons of the Forest.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Acquiring the Rope Gun will be necessary to use any zipline, whether they are part of the world or player-built. Thanks to its built-in motorized trolley, players can travel upward or downward ziplines at the same speed, regardless of the gradient of the rope. Logs and stones can be transported on Ziplines by attaching them at any point on the zipline while facing the desired direction, making for a very fast, easy and cheap way to move large amounts of logs and stones to a given point.

To build a Zipline, a Zipline Rope must first be loaded into the Rope Gun. If the rope can be shot, a white reticle will appear on the surface where the Zipline Rope will be attached. Additionally, a indicator on the Rope Gun will indicate the distance to the attach point and and whether or not the rope can be attached. The Rope Gun cannot be shot if no valid attach point is found. Once the first end of the rope has been shot, the player simply has to make their way to the desired destination and attach the other end there. The path between the two ends of the zipline must be clear of any solid obstacle such as terrain or static props. Trees do not count as obstacles, allowing a zipline to be stretched right through the trunk. However, players and cargo will be knocked off the zipline if they encounter any solid tree on their path. Additionally, clearance is not taken into account when checking for obstacles, which means that players or cargo may unexpectedly clip an obstacle and subsequently be knocked off the zipline. On the other hand however, this can allow players to use ziplines as decorative elements, such as rope fences for instance.

Ziplines have a maximum distance of 150 meters; attempting to stretch the zipline beyond this point will snap the zipline and return the Zipline Rope to the player. Stashing the Rope gun or swimming while stretching a zipline will also cancel the building and return the rope to the player.

Shooting the Rope Gun at an NPC will inflict 1 point of damage and make the zipline go through them as if they were not there.
