Cannibals are the main type of enemy in Sons of the Forest. There are multiple variants of cannibals in the game, including muddies, regular cannibals, masked cannibals, and brutes. Each cannibal has their own unique characteristics and behaviors.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Cannibals live in a primitive society organized in "families" (although what defines the composition of a cannibal family remains unclear). They dwell in small Villages dotted around the Island. Cannibals will wear primitive clothing such as loincloths and animal leather rags, but they can also be seen wearing worn off pieces of contemporary clothing, most likely taken from what remained of the human inhabitants of the Island. During the colder Seasons, Cannibals will wear more clothing as well as makeshift coats made of leather and various organs.
Occasionally, Cannibal patrols may appear around the Island. Certain locations seem to be more prone to be patrolled, suggesting fixed patrolling paths or spawn points. Additionally, building structures may cause a raiding party to appear nearby, attacking both the player and their base. Additionally, cannibals can place effigies around the player's base.
There's a complicated reputation system between the player and cannibals. Killing cannibals will cause them to behave more aggressively towards the player, and choosing not to attack them when provoked may lead to less aggressive behavior.
Cannibals have a chance to drop skin pouches, which can hold various types and rarities of resources.
Regular Cannibals[edit | edit source]
Regular cannibals are the most common type of cannibal that can be encountered on the Island.
Regular cannibals also have a chance to appear as one of the 7 subvariants with unique move sets and attacks. Their apparition will depend on some variables such as the numbers of days passed and the current time of the day.
Painted cannibals[edit | edit source]
This subvariant appears exclusively at night. They don fluorescent bodypaint which makes them more visible in the dark. They otherwise do not possess any additional attribute.
Frank[edit | edit source]
This subvariant is recognizable by its darker, tanned skin and the torch it carries. Upon feeling threatened, he will pour Vodka on his body and light himself on fire with his torch, charging at the player in an attempt to set them ablaze.
Eddy[edit | edit source]
This subvariant is armed with 3 crafted spears he will carry on his back. If the player is at a certain distance from him, he will attempt to throw a spear at them. Otherwise, it uses the same close range attacks and move sets as regular cannibals
Greg[edit | edit source]
This subvariant carries an effigy on its back, which it will plant into the ground near the player as an act of intimidation when feeling threatened. It may also occasionally leave effigies near where the player has slept overnight.
Henry[edit | edit source]
This peculiarly aggressive subvariant is recognizable by the skin mask it wears (not to confuse with the headpiece of the Creepy Armor). It is significantly more agile and sturdy, making for a very tough melee opponent as it can both dodge and attack the player.
Igor[edit | edit source]
This subvariant is recognizable by the antlers strapped to his head and his sack mask. When at a certain distance from the player, it will prioritize charging at them head first, inflicting considerable damage and knocking the player off their feet.
Elise[edit | edit source]
This subvariant is the only female one, recognizable by the golden-colored dress she wears and her makeshift knuckle dusters from sharpened bones. She is significantly more agile, using acrobatic moves and making extensive use of her environment during combat, such as by climbing on trees or jumping on rocks.
Muddies[edit | edit source]
Muddies are the lowest, weakest, and least-intelligent form of cannibals. They appear at the beginning of the game and are relatively easy to kill. Muddies are often considered a nuisance to higher forms of cannibals and will be attacked by them.
Heavies[edit | edit source]
Heavies are larger than other cannibals. Their attacks are significantly more powerful, being able to knock down the player with either a swoop of its club or by kicking them over. Most Heavies will carry a makeshift club made from a skull and a human spine, however, it can also rarely appear with a running outboard motor it will use as a makeshift chainsaw, inflicting immense damage to the player.
Golden-Masked Cannibals[edit | edit source]
Masked Cannibals are leaders of the tribe who are tougher and stronger, and wear golden masks. Both regular cannibals and Heavies can wear a golden mask.
Fat Cannibals[edit | edit source]
Fat cannibals are a tall and stout variant of cannibal. They appear as both male and female with their own distinct appearance and mannerisms, but otherwise sharing the same move sets.
Fat male cannibals are painted in red head to toe, and always appear completely naked and devoid of any paintings. Female fat cannibals have a natural skin color and can appear either completely naked or donning a leather harness with tribal paintings.
